Michael Bruno, Dean, Schaefer School of Engineering and Science Professor Michael S. Bruno, Sc.D., wears a multitude of hats at Stevens. "I am - first and foremost - a teacher," says Bruno. "It is why I pursued my advanced education and it is why I came to Stevens." Since arriving here in 1989, as an educator and director of the world-renowned Davidson Laboratory, he has distinguished himself as a leader in the field of Coastal and Ocean Engineering and as a pioneering expert in the expanding field now known as Maritime Systems.

Recently named the dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science, Bruno is thrilled to be in this leadership role. "I love every aspect of my job," he says, "but I most enjoy the opportunities to gather with a group of faculty and students to discuss a really hard problem. Those brainstorming sessions are terrific learning opportunities, and very satisfying when you actually come up with a solution!"

And his undertaking of student involvement still doesn't stop there. His recent work in establishing and expanding the New York Harbor Observation System included several undergraduate students. "This project is the most extensive of its kind in the nation," says Bruno, "and provides all of the people who live, work, and play in the Harbor the essential information they need to operate safely."

When asked how the students' involvement aided in the project, the question may have been better phrased how did they not aid in the project. "The students worked on our research vessels, deploying sensors in the Harbor," says Bruno, "and they worked on our ocean and weather forecasting (computer) models by developing new graphics and new techniques to use the data to improve the forecasts."

Bruno believes that our undergraduates are a great asset to research. He, along with other faculty, have found that "today's Stevens undergraduate students are well-equipped to immediately contribute to our research projects." He is also thrilled that they are learning along the way since "that is precisely what we are aiming for! This is a large part of what we mean when we talk about the Technogenesis learning environment."

"All of our faculty are teachers and researchers," states Bruno. "They choose to work in a university rather than a research-only environment such as a national lab or an industry lab precisely because they want to work with students. As for me, I will never, ever lose my enthusiasm for teaching. The interaction with students is always interesting and always energizing. And the pride of seeing your students excel in their field remains always, long after that last research paper has been published!"

Dr. Michael S. Bruno, holds a joint doctoral degree in Ocean Engineering from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Despite the numerous boards, committees and organizations he already serves, he has just been appointed to a three-year term on the prestigious Marine Board of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies.
